Plinko: how the chat game works

In Plinko, a viewer drops a ball from the top of a board. It bounces off the pegs and lands in a slot with a multiplier. It's quick to watch, works well between rounds of Parachute Drop, and gives Arcade Points something to be used on.

Playing from chat

A viewer has two options:

  • !plinko drops one ball using the channel's default amount of Arcade Points.
  • !plinko 150 drops one ball using exactly 150 Arcade Points.

The amount only applies to that ball. The whole message after the command must be a plain whole number, so something like !plinko 25 lol is refused. If the amount is below the minimum, too high or more than the viewer has, nothing is taken and the bot replies with the reason in chat.

The multipliers

The board has eleven slots. They mirror each other from left to right, with the highest multiplier on the outer edges and nothing in the middle:

  • 5x on the two outer slots. This is rare and gets its own celebration.
  • 2x and 1.5x next to them.
  • 1x returns the points that were used.
  • 0.5x returns half.
  • 0x, the centre slot, returns nothing.

The result is rounded down to a whole number of points. Most balls land near the middle, so over many balls a viewer gets back less than they use. That's on purpose: Plinko is where points leave a channel, which keeps rewards worth something.

Fair by design

The server decides each result before the animation starts, and the ball then plays out that path on screen. Viewers can't influence it with timing, and neither can the overlay. Each chat message can only take points once, even if the platform delivers it twice.

Plinko only uses Arcade Points. You can't buy them, turn them into money or use coins in Plinko, and nothing won there has any monetary value. The terms ask streamers not to offer money or items of monetary value for Arcade Points.

Setting it up

Plinko has its own OBS browser source next to Parachute Drop. With Arcade Points off for your channel, balls are free and no amount can be chosen:

  • Open the setup page, choose Plinko and copy its address.
  • In OBS, add a new browser source with that address. The OBS guide shows the steps.
  • Place the board where it doesn't cover your game or face.

Settings worth checking

The main setting is the points per ball. It does two jobs: it's the channel minimum and the amount used by plain !plinko. You can set it from 25 to 10,000, and one ball can use at most 10,000. A low minimum lets new viewers join in sooner. A high minimum makes each ball feel like a bigger decision.

If you need a break, moderators can type !plinkopause and later !plinkoresume. Boards and other looks can be changed in Game settings and the store.

When Plinko works best

  • After a Parachute Drop round, when people have just earned points.
  • During a queue or a loading screen, when you need something to fill a short gap.
  • With a reward worth saving for, so viewers have a reason to weigh up each ball.
